How the Redskins can fix the team via the 2012 draft
I know this post has nothing to do with comedy or podcasts, but I just have to get it out because its on my mind. And since its my website, I can do that. If you have a problem with it, please call our customer service line.
It was recently the 20th anniversary of the Redskins last Superbowl win and to be honest, the last time they had a chance to win the Superbowl. Twenty years. To put that in perspective, there are college kids who have never seen a dominant Redskins team in their lives. And for the vast majority of years, the Skins have been somewhat of a joke.
The main problem is that the pattern Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato established of paying big name, older stars to end their careers in Washington lead players to believe that DC is a place you come for a paycheck, not a Superbowl. By eschewing the draft and never letting one coach establish any sort of continuity here, the Redskins have not been building a program as much as filling holes with name brand pegs.
This all seems to have changed after the disastrous McNabb and Haynesworth signings. The Burgundy Revolution pushed Dan Snyder into the long overdue firing of Vinny Cerrato and Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen were given the keys to the franchise.
The first order of business was to switch the defense from a base 4-3 to a 3-4 in the hopes to create more pressure on the quarterback and more turnovers. Could this have been accomplished by drafting defensive linemen in the 4-3 (the last high pick the Redskins used on a d-lineman was Kenard Lang)? We will never know. But after a rough start, the 3-4 seems to be rounding into place.
The most important positions in the 3-4 are the Nose Tackle and the Linebackers. Barry Cofield has done a great job in his first year at NT. As far as the linebackers, Orakpo and Kerrigan are a fierce duo on the outsides and London Fletcher is a machine in the middle. Rocky McIntosh doesn't seem to be a good fit for the other ILB and should be allowed to seek a job elsewhere in this offseason. If the Skins can get another impact ILB and re-sign Fletcher, they could have one of the best linebacking corps in the league. Which brings me to my 2012 draft strategy.
Obviously, this team is not going to go far with Rex Grossman at the helm and Jon Beck didn't exactly inspire confidence. That leaves Washington with a few choices. If things go as expected, Peyton Manning will not be on the Colts next year. If that is the case, Indy will almost assuredly draft Andrew Luck. So he is off the board. Robert Griffin III is likely to be drafted by Cleveland, either by trading up (since they have the most ammo to do so) or staying at their #4 slot. So lets say RGIII is gone. Matt Flynn is likely to be franchised by Green Bay, so they won't let him walk away for nothing. So the most likely available players are Manning and Flynn.
The Redskins should not sign Peyton Manning for a variety of reasons. First, even though he has supposedly been medically cleared to play, we are talking about a guy in his mid-thirties, who just sat out a season with a neck injury. Also, Manning basically calls his own plays. Not only does that mean another change in the offense, but a loss of control for the Shanahans. Not likely. Finally, signing Manning would just be a return to the old formula that the Skins have proven over and over again does not work. So they can't sign Manning.
The question then becomes: how much do they like Flynn? It would likely cost Washington a second round pick to take him from the Packers. Is Flynn better than, say, Ryan Tannehill (a guy they may be able to take in the second)? If so, I say trade for Flynn. He has proven that he is ready to play, at least in the ideal circumstances of the Green Bay offense.
So that would leave Washington without a secod round pick. This leads perfectly into how the first round should go. Trade the #6 pick to a team in the middle of the first round for their pick and another pick later in the draft. I don't have the chart in front of me, so I don't know what the jump would cost a team. But this strategy will work if the Skins take ASU Linebacker Vontaze Burfict.
Burfict is an explosive presence, whose draft stock dropped because of his anger issues. Wouldn't it make sense to pair him with the ultimate pro's pro and potential mentor London Fletcher? London may be aging, but his production has not slowed down and he could teach Burfict how to act professionally. Burfict would bring athleticism we haven't seen at LB since LaVar Arrington. And think of this linebacking crew: Kerrigan, Fletcher, Burfict, Orakpo. Now you have 3 guys who can get to the QB at any time and Fletcher to clean up everything in the middle. No offense to Perry Riley, but I like this lineup more and more as I look at it.
In the second round, Washington can either (as previously said) use the pick for Flynn or take the best available young QB. Or if you want to wait another year for a QB, take a big WR, such as Wisconsin's Nick Toon.
The Redskins have many options in this year's draft, but the one I favor is with the 1st and 2nd round picks, ending up with Burfict, Flynn, and another pick later in the draft. It seems like a win-win to me.
