The Not Bill Simmons 2012 National Sports Collectors Convention Post

I have always been into sports. This is probably due to the fact that I was a child/teen during the heyday of the Washington Redskins. They won Super Bowls when I was 5, 10, and 14 years old. When the Redskins are winning in Washington, nothing else matters. Its been a long 20 years. So when I read about The National Sports Collectors Convention on ESPN.com, I knew I needed to go. This year, it was in Baltimore, so I headed up to Charm City to meet my buddies Stemp and Fisher for the day.

Mmmmm... bacon.
We began at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. I've been there many times, but they wanted to take a tour of that magnificent bastard, so I joined them. However, the first tour was sold out, so we got a bite to eat at Dempsey's (named for Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey) pub, located in the Warehouse just beyond right field. I ordered something called: "Bacon on a Stick." And before you judge me for ordering something called "Bacon on a Stick," know this: each thick-cut piece of bacon was dipped in maple syrup. So, yes, I win. Then it was on to the tour of the park.

We're the three best friends that anyone could have...
We began the tour on Eutaw Street, which is the pedestrian walkway that separates the field from the warehouse. Our tour guide was a 50ish woman who was wearing this Madonna-esque head microphone that was attached to a speaker/fanny pack worn on the front. Somehow, it was still kind of hard to hear her. Anyway, she talked about all the home run balls that were marked with plaques on Eutaw Street and that only Ken Griffey Jr. has hit the warehouse on the fly (but during the Home Run Derby, so it doesn't count.) Then was the first story about Babe Ruth, a guy who was born in Baltimore, but never played for the Orioles, and who has entirely too much of the tour devoted to him (and his own statue outside of the stadium!) This would be like if there was a statue of Michael Jordan outside of Cameron Indoor Stadium. But I digress. We actually got to go in the dugout, press box, and seemingly every other part of Camden Yards for the next hour and a half. Having been to games at the park before, the tour was totally worth it, but they could tighten it up a bit.

Next, it was on to the convention. After buying our tickets, we headed in and it was overwhelming. Sports stuff as far as the eye can see... and fat guys in Hawaiian shirts! In the interest of saving space/not boring you, I'll just post the pics with descriptions. Without further ado, The 2012 National Sports Collectors Convention.
This guy was selling auto'd mini helmets. Behind the Colts one on the table, there is a "Necessary Roughness" helmet. I said I didn't think it was autographed and the seller jumped right up and said, "Yesch it isch! It hasch Schinbad, Kathy Ireland, Jaeschon Bateman, Robert Loggcha." In case you are wondering, yes, he had a speech impediment and no, Scott Bakula did not sign the helmet. Otherwise, I clearly would own it right now.

Some Michigan buttons. Sideways.

Pete Maravich made an appearance.

That Redskins pennant is sweet, but not $225 worth of sweet.

These are for my buddy Ike, Syracuse Alum. If you look closely, you can see the Native American! The one in the middle is a Gator (for the Gator Bowl).

Sam Kinnison?

If there were ever a time and place to wear hockey jerseys besides 90's rap videos, I would have bought this classic Pavel Bure number.

Old All Star jerseys that were not for sale.

This guy was trying to find someone dumb enough to buy Beanie Babies.

And used wrestling figures.

Sadly, Evander is auctioning his belts.

These were cool shadowboxes (not in the Wu-Tang sword style) with MacFarlane toys in them.

Packers. Nothing but Packers.

Good find by Fisher. Somehow the gold tooth makes this way more racist.

I wanted a Roethlisberger in a bar bathroom shadowbox, but this was all they had.

I asked this seller why Marion Barber was $80 and Charles Woodson was $30 and his answer made the space-time continuum bend in on itself. Stemp wound up buying Woodson.

Do you like Tim Burton movies that didn't really work out?

The lone, sad Bradley Beal piece at the convention (meanwhile, RGIII was everywhere).

Jon Stewart: American

Garbage Pail Kids and Jedi cards. When I was 11, I would have paid anything for this case.

This poster was giant. The pic doesn't do it justice. So cool.

Game worn catcher's equipment? Smells terrific.

Helmets. Helmets everywhere.

You want a Henry Hill signed Tampa Zoo map? We can pickle that.

Creepy Brett Favre picture.

Seems like this should cost more than $39

This party just took a turn for the douche.

So many helmets

Artsy.

"Honey, good news! I bought a painting. You're gonna love it!"

This should hang in the Louvre.

They had every Sports Illustrated or any other sports-related magazine you could want.

Why?

I hope they were washed.

Had to include this. We're Comedy K, dammit!

The finest in gas station glassware.

I kind of regret not buying the Astrodome shot glass.

Again, why?

There was even music memorabilia.

Buttons from the 70's.

Cards. Fooled me once, shame on you. Fool me twice? I don't think so.

There's so many directions to go with these, just go ahead and make up your own caption.

A tiny Orioles couch. Of course.

Some of the cooler basketball uniforms you're ever likely to see.

Constipated Brooks Robinson.

A White House Football.

Foreground: jerseys. Midground: young MJ endorsed Hoops game. Background: fat guy in a Hawaiian shirt.

Hey! Komedy Kings!

If you didn't complete your '62 Conifer set.

Who is the market for this?

Rings.

NBA Champeens!

Artsy.

It was $295. No clue what they were currently asking. Again, I kind of regret not getting this.

If you like Seinfeld tertiary characters, they have autographs for you.

The Desert Storm Cards really took a tumble in value.

More cool buttons.

Old jackets, not for sale.

A "Head Helmet" and a "Basket Ball."

If my friends could see me now...

They even had Japanese stuff.

I got more Thermos than Sadaharu Oh.

Luongo super fan. That is a woman.

Sam Horn. Upside Down.

These women were selling giant lighters with swimsuit models on them.

I guess some people will buy anything.

The blue carpeted "VIP" area.

Bats.

A mirror featuring Lou Gehrig crying as he gives his retirement speech. Drink Seagram's!

Lots of sad old guys looking at checklists, hoping to fill out their baseball card sets.

Head for the mountains!

The VIP "Smurf Turf."

I wish there were more posters there, but alas.

Drinking stuff.

You think we'll win today?

This is America, buddy.

"Hey, Willie!"

Alan Thicke

Now you're playing with power.

Not sure if this is the right convention for this guitar.

The most notorious baseball card ever.

Uncut sheets of cards.

How do you play faustball? With the fist!

These guys are just there to show off.

I prefer Terry's Creamy Peanut Butter.

Another great find by Fisher: "Kevin" Van Horn.

Things didn't go well for Bam Morris.

The all-star of the event: neck brace, jersey, and luggage.

My haul. Not bad for $15.

And nothing would be complete without the Brady Anderson beefcake photo.

Goodnight from Baltimore. Next year in Chicago!

Oppa Gangnam Style
